It’s very hard to keep up with all of the changing details for New York-area folks affected by Hurricane Sandy. Right now, a lot of our friends and family and coworkers still have no power, or are stranded without public transit. Mayor Bloomberg just announced that the local death toll is up to 30. So so sad. We are going to try to keep this live blog updated with resources and announcements.
What’s Off:
-Sorry guys, if you were looking forward to the season opening NBA game between the Brooklyn Nets vs. the New York Knicks….the game that was supposed to take place on Thursday, Nov 1 at the Barclay Center has been officially postponed. Obviously because the major subway hub to the new stadium is still closed down.
While they haven’t officially announced a new date for the Nets vs Knicks match….the Mayor says that the “season opener” will be this Saturday instead. Which is the previously scheduled Brooklyn Nets vs. Toronto Raptors game.
-Public schools are closed for the rest of the week. This is unprecedented.
-Bellevue Hospital is the second hospital to be shut down in NYC. It is now evacuating hundreds of patients. Complete disaster scenario. Very scary.
-The annual Halloween Parade in the Village is cancelled for tonight. The parade gets hundreds of thousands of visitors, and that takes up police presence which can’t be spared right now. It may be rescheduled for next week. No date yet.
What’s On:
-The New York City Marathon is still happening on Sunday. Seems like there will be many runners who won’t be able to get to NYC from all over the world to participate, but the Mayor wants to keep the event intact because of the money that the marathon generates for local businesses.
-All of the bridges over the East River are now open, but you have to drive with three or more people from 6am to midnight on Thursday and Friday. So be kind and give someone a ride. There is massive traffic jams and price gouging car services and 2-hour waits at the gas stations.

How to Help:
-Here is a detailed list of NY-area shelters…if you’re near one, and available, stop by. I’m hearing that f you are over 16 years old, and can lift over 30 lbs., they could use people for 8 hour shifts.
-Donate $10 to the Red Cross via phone: text “REDCROSS” to 90999
-Volunteer to help out at shelters via the Red Cross, or NYC Service (they have a mailing list)
-Report stranded animals: New York City’s hotline (347) 573-1561
-Make a $10 text donation to the Humane Society Disaster Relief Fund: text “ANIMALS” to 20222
Who Still Has No Power...and according to reports, these outages will continue until Friday, or longer! There are reports that 95% of Long Island, NY is without power. Unreal. (map via HuffPo) :
